A Healthcare Turning Point in Central Vietnam: The Tissue Bank of The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital

On February 10, 2026, the Ministry of Health officially granted an operating license to the Newlife Tissue Bank under the Research Center of The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital in Da Nang. This marks a significant milestone for the Central region, now home to a licensed tissue bank, opening opportunities for local storage of umbilical cord blood cells and adipose tissue cells.

'Strategic Piece' Within the Research Center

Unlike conventional tissue banks, this unit operates under the University Hospital of The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital and is closely connected with both the Institute and the University at the same location. This structure enables direct integration between clinical storage, scientific research, and the transfer of research outcomes into clinical applications within a unified University - Hospital ecosystem.

Establishing the tissue bank here is not merely about storage capacity, but also a clear affirmation of the strategic vision of the University Council. With comprehensive investment in internationally standardized clean rooms, tissue testing and classification systems, extraction technologies, and deep cryopreservation equipment, all components are seamlessly integrated into a modern tissue banking system oriented toward international GMP standards. The University - Hospital is moving toward mastering cell production and Exosome technologies, helping bridge the gap from laboratory to bedside.

A Pioneering Tissue Bank in the Central Region

Previously, families in the Central region who wished to store umbilical cord blood often had to send samples to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or even to neighboring countries such as Thailand, Singapore, or Malaysia. Long-distance transportation always carries potential risks related to temperature control and the “golden time” for cell preservation.

The establishment of the Newlife Tissue Bank at The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital has comprehensively addressed this challenge. It is the first licensed tissue bank in the Central region authorized to receive, process, preserve, store, and supply not only umbilical cord blood but also adipose tissue and umbilical cord tissue. The bank also serves as a source of mesenchymal stem cells derived from umbilical cord tissue and adipose tissue for research centers and stem cell and Exosome production facilities, supporting treatment for both acquired and congenital diseases. Globally, approximately 80 different diseases are currently under research and treatment using stem cell products, including leukemia, bone marrow failure, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, diabetes, COPD, osteoarthritis, and more. Stem cell research is also opening new therapeutic pathways for stroke patients, paralysis due to spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases, adult dementia, autism, and others.

This provides optimal convenience for residents from Da Nang and neighboring provinces to access cord tissue storage services and advanced regenerative medicine solutions closer to home.

Stem Cells: “Biological Insurance” for the Future

Worldwide and in Vietnam, stem cells (especially umbilical cord blood stem cells) are considered a priceless form of “biological savings.”

Storing a newborn’s umbilical cord blood not only safeguards and potentially treats the child in the future should serious illness arise, but also serves as a valuable biological resource for family members with compatible biological markers.

The licensing of the Tissue Bank at The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital is not only a source of pride for the institution but also a progressive step forward for regional healthcare. “We do not simply store cells; we safeguard hope for many families,” a representative of the University - Hospital shared.

The Long-Term Vision of The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital

The investment in the Tissue Bank demonstrates a firm and strategic step by The Phan Chau Trinh Medical University - Hospital in integrating education, research, and healthcare services toward the future of medicine. This will serve as a nurturing ground for stem cell research projects and a trusted destination for residents in the Central region to entrust the future health of generations to come.

The Newlife Tissue Bank is expected to foster a modern medical ecosystem, positioning the Central region as a bright spot on Vietnam’s regenerative medicine map.
