Biography of Professor, Doctor of Science, Medical Doctor Bui Duy Tam

Professor, Doctor of Science, Medical Doctor Bùi Duy Tâm is one of the most prominent and respected figures in modern Vietnamese medicine. Born in 1934 in Hanoi, he began his medical journey at the Hanoi Medical School – the cradle of Vietnam’s leading doctors. In 1954, following the country's partition, he migrated south and continued his medical pursuit with unwavering passion.

His talent and dedication were soon recognized, and he was selected to study in the United States under a faculty development program for Saigon Medical University. There, he not only absorbed the essence of modern medicine but also nurtured a grand vision: to build a Vietnamese medical system that is modern yet deeply rooted in national identity.

In 1967, at just 33 – a notably young age for an academic leader – he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Hue Medical University. However, the Tet Offensive in 1968 forced the faculty and students to temporarily relocate to Saigon. Amid these difficulties, it was he who rallied former students to return to Hue, rekindling the flame of knowledge for their beloved school. Thanks to his leadership, Hue Medical University survived and continued to grow.

In 1972, he founded the Faculty of Medicine at Minh Duc University – the first private medical school in South Vietnam. Once again, he left his mark by innovating the medical education model and creating learning opportunities for generations of talented students.

After the historical events of 1975, he settled in the United States. Despite being far from home, his heart never left Vietnam. Deep inside, he carried a persistent desire – to contribute to the rebuilding of Vietnamese medicine.

In 2011, he returned and accepted the role of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Tan Tao University (Long An). With passion, dedication, and visionary thinking, he laid a solid foundation for the faculty, nurturing a new generation of doctors who are both professionally competent and morally upright.

In 2017, when Phan Chau Trinh University (Quang Nam) was officially authorized by the Ministry of Education and Training to open its medical program, he once again accepted the call to return, joining the school to establish and develop a unique medical training model: “American Medicine – Vietnamese Soul” – a dream he had cherished all his life.

Even at the age of over 84, he remained sharp in knowledge, innovative in expertise, and passionate like a young person. His image – diligently guiding students, caring in every lecture, serious in every academic meeting – became a symbol of love for the profession and care for future generations.

Once, he emotionally shared: “I don’t have much time left. Phan Chau Trinh University, please let me devote what I have so I can be close to the medical students – for when I leave, I will no longer be indebted to the next generation.” That statement was a vow, a heartfelt dedication, a spiritual legacy he left for future generations.

Beyond medicine, he is also a profound cultural scholar. He authored nearly 20 publications on ethnology, fine arts, lacquer painting, and medical monographs, with notable works including: “White Paper on Hepatitis in Vietnam”, “The Humanity of Vietnamese Lacquer”, and “Scholarly Villages of Vietnam”.

He also founded the “Gió Khơi” (Open Wind) youth movement in South Vietnam during the 1960s – a movement that blended sports, arts, morality, and education, inspiring a beautiful way of life.

Not only a teacher, physician, and cultural scholar, he is also an inspiring figure of extraordinary living – at the age of 72, he set foot on the North Pole, and at 82, he skydived from 3,000 meters, marking a truly ageless spirit.

Today, the Bùi Duy Tâm Library at Phan Chau Trinh University stands as a vivid testament to the legacy he has left behind – a true teacher, devoting his life to education, medicine, and the future of Vietnam.
