How to calculate the graduation score

Many students are still wondering how the high school graduation score is calculated? In fact, the calculation is not too complicated if you clearly understand the formula and its components. Let’s explore the details with Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) to feel more confident in this important exam!

What is the graduation score?

It is the score used to determine eligibility for high school graduation. In addition, the graduation score (ĐXTN) is also used by many universities as a criterion in the admission process. To be recognized as a high school graduate, candidates must meet the requirements to take the graduation exam, achieve more than 1.0 point in all subjects, and have a ĐXTN ≥ 5.0 (on a 10-point scale). The ĐXTN is recorded on the candidate’s temporary graduation certificate.

How is the ĐXTN calculated?

The ĐXTN consists of 04 components:

• — Average score of graduation exam subjects

• — Average high school academic score (Grades 10, 11, 12)

• — Bonus points (if any)

• — Priority points (if any)

The formula is as follows:

ĐXTN = [(Average exam score + Total bonus points/4 + Academic average)/2] + Priority points

Where:

  • Average exam score = Total exam scores / Number of subjects taken
  • Academic average = (Grade 10 average x 1 + Grade 11 average x 2 + Grade 12 average x 3) / 6
  • Bonus points have 03 levels: 2.0; 1.5; and 1.0: Applied to candidates who win prizes in provincial or national excellent student competitions, practical exams, arts performances, sports competitions, national defense sports festivals, science and technology competitions, or international letter-writing contests organized by the education sector in coordination with relevant authorities from the provincial level and above.
  • Priority points: There are 03 levels: 0.5; 0.25; and 0. Applied to students under priority policy categories.

What is the significance of the graduation score in university admissions?

In addition to being a requirement for high school graduation, the ĐXTN is also used by many universities for admission through academic records or other methods that do not rely on exam scores. Specifically:

  • Applicants to General Medicine and Dentistry programs must have a total score of 03 graduation exam subjects ≥ 20.0 or a ĐXTN ≥ 8.5
  • Applicants to teacher education programs and law-related programs must have a total score of 03 graduation exam subjects ≥ 18.0 or a ĐXTN ≥ 8.5
  • Applicants to programs such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Dental Prosthetics, Medical Imaging, Rehabilitation, Preventive Medicine, Midwifery; Physical Education, Music Education, and Fine Arts Education must have a total score of 03 graduation exam subjects ≥ 16.5 or a ĐXTN ≥ 6.5
