How long does it take to become a professional dental nurse?

If someone asks, “How long does it take to become a Dental Nurse?” the answer is about four years of university education. But if the question is, “How long does it take to become confident enough to support patients throughout a dental treatment procedure?” then the answer goes far beyond the number of years spent in school.

Because Dental Nursing is not simply about learning a profession. It is a journey of acquiring knowledge, developing practical skills, cultivating professionalism, and building a sense of responsibility for human health.

At Phan Chau Trinh University, the Bachelor of Dental Nursing program is delivered over eight semesters (four years), following a structured pathway from foundational knowledge to professional practice.

During the first years, students are equipped with fundamental nursing and health sciences knowledge. From the second year onward, they begin to explore dental-specific courses in greater depth, gradually developing competencies from basic to advanced levels.

In particular, the curriculum is organized into three stages:

  • Theoretical Stage: Building a strong foundation in medical and nursing sciences.
  • Pre-Clinical Stage: Students practice skills on simulation models, laboratory systems, and within the Simulation Hospital before interacting with real patients.
  • Clinical Stage: Students undertake clinical training in hospital settings under the supervision of faculty members and practicing clinicians.

Pre-clinical and clinical training account for approximately 70% of the curriculum. This provides students with extensive opportunities to strengthen professional skills, become familiar with real healthcare environments, and gradually develop the mindset of a healthcare professional.

More importantly, throughout their studies, students discover their individual strengths and identify the career pathway that best suits their aspirations, including:

  1. Specialized Clinical Practice: Focusing on chairside assistance and clinical support within Oral and Maxillofacial departments of hospitals or dental centers.
  2. Operations & Management: Developing expertise in clinic quality management, treatment coordination, and advancing toward positions such as Head Dental Nurse or Healthcare System Manager.
  3. Academia & Research: Pursuing postgraduate education, including Master’s and Doctoral degrees.
  4. Business & Entrepreneurship: With sufficient business knowledge, passion, and professional experience, graduates may establish and manage their own dental healthcare facilities.

After graduation, students continue professional practice in accordance with the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment before obtaining a professional practice license.
