While many students enjoy their summer vacation, Anh Hao — a third-year Medical student — chose to spend the entire summer following doctors at Phan Chau Trinh University Hospital to learn more and sharpen his professional skills.
Every day, from early morning, Hao is already present in the departments, shadowing doctors during each case and assisting with tasks suitable for a third-year student. The busy on-call schedule, sometimes stretching late into the evening, doesn’t tire him out — in fact, Hao says he’s “more excited the more he works,” because each case offers a diverse real-life lesson to learn from.
“I want to make use of the summer so I don’t forget my knowledge, while also improving my clinical skills. Practicing in the university hospital environment is both safe and professional, so I get to learn more from doctors and nurses,” Hao shared.
For Hao, this summer internship at the hospital is an investment in the future — giving him control over his learning time and offering personal insights into a professional hospital working environment, from regulations to workflow processes that he has been able to get closer to during this period.
In the coming academic year, Hao will officially become a fourth-year student — the stage where students get to practice in various specialized hospitals, face a deeper load of knowledge, and expand their experience. Choosing continuous internship at the university hospital is not only a solid stepping stone to boost Hao’s confidence but also an opportunity to encounter a wide range of medical conditions and practice real-world problem-solving skills.
It’s clear that, thanks to the close collaboration between the Institute and the University, students are always given maximum opportunities to study and train in a professional setting, with modern facilities and specialized faculty in the health sciences.
The tradition of “spending summer to hone the craft” has been upheld and spread by many generations of PCTU students. Quite a few alumni have made use of their summer break to stay at the university hospital, gaining valuable experience. One notable example is Dr. Pham Van Uoc — a former medical student who turned his summer into a determined journey of learning and growing in the clinical environment. See Uoc’s story here
