Introducing the AI-Powered Smart Library: Making Medical Knowledge More Accessible to Learners

On the afternoon of June 8, 2026, at Hall C101 of the Simulation Hospital, Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) officially launched its AI-Integrated Smart Library. This is the first artificial intelligence product researched and developed by the University’s own team, marking a new milestone in the journey toward building a comprehensive medical education ecosystem in the digital era.

The launch event attracted lecturers, physicians, staff, and students from across the Institute–University system. During the program, participants had the opportunity to experience the platform firsthand and explore how AI can support learning, research, and clinical practice.

The product was developed by the DMU (Deep Medicine Unit) using the technology infrastructure invested in and operated by PCTU. Over the past five months, the team has carried out a comprehensive development process, including server infrastructure deployment, model training, application development, and real-world testing. The system has now completed its first phase and has officially been put into operation.

To develop the product, the DMU utilized MedGemma 27B, an advanced open-source AI language model developed by Google and optimized for healthcare and medical applications. However, the core value of the platform lies not in the AI model itself, but in how PCTU has built its own medical knowledge ecosystem, enabling AI to access, analyze, and connect trusted learning resources to support users.

Instead of searching through thousands of documents and scientific publications, students and faculty members can now ask questions in natural language as if they were speaking with a learning mentor. The system automatically retrieves, synthesizes, and generates answers based on resources from the PCTU Digital Library as well as internationally recognized medical databases such as Europe PMC, PubMed, MedlinePlus, AAFP, and many other open educational resources.

A key distinguishing feature is that every response is accompanied by clear citations, allowing users to verify information, access original sources, enhance the quality of learning and research, and support decision-making in clinical practice.

For students, the most immediate benefit is the significant reduction in time spent searching for materials and locating reliable information. Hours previously devoted to filtering through hundreds of search results can now be redirected toward learning, analysis, and knowledge application.

Quynh Anh, a third-year Dentistry student, shared:

“After trying the platform, I found it extremely useful. Previously, whenever I prepared a presentation, I had to spend a great deal of time searching for suitable materials. Now, the system helps me find exactly what I need much faster and far more conveniently. I hope the platform will continue to be improved and provide even better experiences for users in the future.”

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung, Chairman of the University Council, described the platform as a highly practical product that contributes to completing the University’s educational ecosystem.

According to Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung, the development of the AI-Integrated Smart Library aligns with PCTU’s strategic direction of training healthcare professionals closely connected with science and technology. Biomedical technology, stem cells, big data, and artificial intelligence are regarded as essential foundations for building the medical model of the future.

More than just a search tool, the AI-Integrated Smart Library represents the beginning of a journey toward a personalized learning environment where learners can access knowledge more quickly, accurately, and effectively. It also demonstrates the research capability, technological mastery, and spirit of innovation of the PCTU team as they work toward the goal of educating healthcare professionals who are ready for the future.
