“Decoding” Diabetes in the Era of Personalized Medicine

On March 28, 2026, at Phan Chau Trinh University of Medicine Hospital, a scientific seminar themed “Diabetes Treatment in the New Era: From Pathophysiology to Personalized Medicine” was held with the participation of physicians, healthcare staff, and individuals interested in the field of endocrinology and metabolism.

The seminar was organized to update the latest advances in understanding the complex pathophysiological mechanisms of diabetes, thereby contributing to a shift in treatment thinking from simple glycemic control toward a personalized medicine approach, selecting treatment regimens based on the unique characteristics of each patient.

Presenting at the seminar were experts in endocrinology:

- Dr. To Viet Thuan – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Head of the Training Department, Phan Chau Trinh University, concurrently Head of the Endocrinology Unit, Phan Chau Trinh University of Medicine Hospital;

- Dr. Bui Thi Thanh Hien – Head of the Department of Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine, Trung Vuong Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City)

- Dr. To Anh Tuan – Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Northern Quang Nam Mountainous Regional General Hospital.

In the professional content section, the speakers focused on presenting many core issues, notably the “Ominous Octet” model (the eight disease-causing mechanisms) and new pathways in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. In addition, the seminar clarified patient stratification criteria based on phenotype, genetic factors, and comorbidities.

Advances in pharmacological treatment were also updated, especially new-generation drug classes such as SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists, which not only help control blood glucose but also provide cardiovascular and renal benefits. At the same time, new standards in early diagnosis and complication management were shared, contributing to improved patient care outcomes.

The seminar emphasized practical clinical skills. Participants were introduced to ways of setting individualized HbA1c targets based on factors such as age, disease duration, comorbidities, and life expectancy. The application of modern technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), smart insulin pens, and insulin pumps was also introduced, helping improve the quality of disease management.

In addition, the importance of building multifactorial treatment regimens combining nutrition, exercise, and medication tailored to each patient’s economic conditions and psychological status was highlighted. Counseling and health education skills were also mentioned as key factors, enabling patients to become more proactive in self-management and early recognition of complications.

The seminar not only contributed to updating professional knowledge but also opened up a comprehensive, modern, patient-centered treatment approach – an inevitable trend in contemporary healthcare.
