PHAN CHAU TRINH UNIVERSITY: TRAINING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS FROM HOSPITAL-SCHOOL MODEL

In the field of medical education, the hospital-school model at Phan Chau Trinh University has proven to be efficient and of high quality in training healthcare professionals. This particular feature stands as one of the university's strongest strengths, enabling the creation of accurate models and laying the groundwork for the improvement of quality in health science education in the future.

Chain of 7 private practice hospitals nationwide

Always follow mission and vision, making it one of the few prestigious health training universities, in which the learner's professional knowledge and skills are honored. Phan Chau Trinh University has built a personal practice hospital system prior to the start of training.

In the beginning, there were only four Tam Tri Medical Hospitals available, located in Da Nang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Thap, with a total capacity of 750 beds. As the training scale expanded to meet the demand for well-qualified training and clinical practice, the school, under the mandatory policy of the school council and administrators, developed a practice hospital network with two additional hospitals in Dong Thap. In 2024, the school plans to add an additional 300 beds directly at the school, furthermore, improving the hospital-school system to include seven hospitals with a total capacity of 1,400 beds. The training facility adheres to the provisions of Decree No. 111/2017/ND-CP issued by the Government.

With this model, the training activities of the university ensure that practical training is always accompanied by theoretical knowledge. The proportion of internships and practical training in hospitals accounts for 70% to 80% of the total duration of each training program.

How can we make hospital-school models be realistic and effective?

Firstly, the school council, the administrators, and the managers of the practice hospitals must agree on liberal education philosophy and training philosophy to pursue strategic training that is student-centered, with the utmost importance placed on patients and the supreme value of careers. From there, a professional and outstanding school and training programs can be built, aligning with the training strategy and continuously improving to
meet the output standards.
The most outstanding feature is that all the practice hospitals and schools are managed by one unified entity. It is this structure that ensures consistency from the school to the hospitals, enabling the achievement of strategic objectives in training at Phan Chau Trinh University. Doctors who provide clinical instruction to students also serve as instructors for theoretical subjects, combining both roles in one. The theoretical content is effectively transferred into the practical context through clinical practice, involving the care of patients in the hospitals.
Hence, the students can easily and rapidly focus within the ecosystem of the hospital-school. Simultaneously, it provides a great opportunity for students to apply their learned knowledge to real-life situations in a logical and coherent manner.

Experience practice at hospitals in the first-year

All students have the opportunity to engage in realistic practice within a hospital environment right from the beginning of the school year. This is a dream come true for every medical student. Early internships at hospitals also help students enhance their five senses and, consequently, develop the characteristics of a doctor and a healthcare professional with a compassionate mind and a caring heart Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung, the School President, stated, 'From the first day of school, all of you (students) must engage with the hospitals to understand their overall structure and the roles of employees. You need to empathize with the patients' pain, hear the cries of newborn babies, recognize the unique smell of hospitals, observe the compassion in the eyes of nurses, and the dedication of doctors when they face challenging cases. You will experience those long night shifts alongside doctors, take care of patients, and find joy in witnessing their recovery. It is through these experiences that the characteristics of a health major student will gradually develop over time, leading to the opportunity for direct realistic practice at a hospital once you become a doctor. He also added, 'As students studying to become doctors, you (students) must learn and master nursing skills to understand the comprehensive process of patient care. Therefore, the training programs are structured by the school with the purpose of enabling students to learn these skills in their first semester.
Besides that, students also enjoy numerous benefits at the university. They can closely examine the student medical records, specifically created by the school, which is based on the foundation of the United States' student records. Student records are created for students to use on clinical practice of all courses.

The instructors who participate in instructing practice and clinical practice are called Clinical Instructors (Cls). They are excellent doctors currently working at Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU). Well-qualified clinical guidelines are standardized at a ratio of 1.5/1, meaning that one Cl can only instruct a maximum group of five students per bed. The process of clinical guidelines is reviewed by the learners, the Cls themselves, the professional management system of Clinical Instructors (CIs), and Entrusted Professional Assessment (EPA)
The results from the survey conducted by the school's Testing and Assurance Center have proven that the hospital-school model at PCTU, along with other educational methods based on the foundation and theory of the school, yield a variety of positive outcomes and career skills for students, exceeding expectations. The early exposure to hospital environments, the consistency of training progress, the opportunity to gain practical experience from the first year, and the consistency in guidance and evaluation are the school's strong points. With the expansion of the Tam Tri Medical Hospital system and the school, along with a commitment to meet the admission expectations, this model is an ideal choice for training high-quality healthcare professionals for society.
