Recently, Phan Chau Trinh University Hospital (Dien Ban Dong Ward, Da Nang City) successfully performed surgery on a patient with strangulated grade-4 mixed hemorrhoids (the most severe stage of the disease) using the Longo procedure, helping the patient recover quickly with minimal pain.
The patient, N.V.T (60 years old), was admitted to the hospital with severe prolapsed hemorrhoids, anal pain and pressure, and rectal bleeding. Previously, the patient had only undergone temporary medical treatment with medication. A long history of chronic constipation and frequent alcohol consumption had worsened the condition.
In addition to hemorrhoids, the patient had recently undergone colonoscopy to remove two benign colon polyps and was diagnosed with atrophic gastritis. Examination revealed severe strangulated hemorrhoids, with a high risk of necrosis or infection if not treated promptly.
The surgical team administered spinal anesthesia, sutured the mucosa above the dentate line, used the Longo device to completely remove the hemorrhoids, controlled bleeding, and placed topical medication for support.
One day after surgery, the patient was alert, walking lightly, eating normally, and no longer had bleeding or prolapsed hemorrhoids. On the second day, the patient was discharged with guidance on diet and lifestyle to prevent recurrence.
According to the doctors, severe hemorrhoids not only cause pain but also carry risks of infection, thrombosis, bleeding, or necrosis. Many patients delay medical examination and only seek hospital care when the pain becomes unbearable, making surgery the only option.
If symptoms such as rectal bleeding, anal burning or pain, and hemorrhoid prolapse during bowel movements occur, patients should seek medical attention early to receive timely treatment, avoid complications, and ensure a smoother recovery.
