PCTU medical students study clinically at the hospital from the beginning

There are many medical experts who believe that the first year medical students do not have sufficient knowledge of basic medicine such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology ... it is impossible. Going to the hospital right from the first year, and when they go to hospital, it is difficult for children to study effectively. But with the problem-based learning method of teaching (problem-solving learning), Professor. TS. Bui Duy Tam and GS. Jessica Anne Clarke helped the students learn a lot of useful knowledge on the first day of clinical study at Tam Tri Danang Hospital. Training Department was convinced and really surprised with the effectiveness of this meeting.

One week earlier, students were taught by GS. TS. BS. Bui Duy Tam and GS. Jessica Anne Clarke. The day before the class took place, TS. BS. Le Viet Thuan and GS. BS. Bui Duy Tam asked for permission and explained to his patient about teaching and learning objectives. With the consent of the patients, the next day, the students were divided into small groups, practicing how to ask the disease. Mr. Tam modeled them for a few minutes first and then worked with the patients themselves. After that, all gathered in the hall of the hospital, each group presented the clinical cases they had asked. They can not only present the entire history in Vietnamese, but also translate the entire history into English. Professors and trainers are very pleased with the results of the students.

After the lesson, Professor Clarke discussed with students about this way of learning, and they shared their feelings.

Le Thuc Vy said: “Through the first session, I learned how to communicate with patients, I understand that if I ask too many questions, especially the excess questions, the patient does not want to answer, most is with difficult patients. So they find ways to choose questions to ask the least and still get the most information. Not only that, but I learned teamwork skills because they had to discuss and write reports for the professor. ”

Nguyen Huu Hoai said: "I am very happy to learn this way, I learn how to communicate with patients, learn how to ask for diseases, and learn a lot of experiences"

Professor Clarke must also happily exclaim: “Your students are very smart. They’ve been the beginning medical students for a few days but they learned and understood a lot of things ”- Your student is very intelligent. You are just medical students who have just started studying for a few days and you have learned and understood a lot.

The Training Department is also very surprised by the students' progress and understanding. Although their input English level is not high (95% of the students are only at A1-A2 level), they have made great efforts and actively studied. If the first day of class entered, most of the students were shy, less communicative, afraid to speak English, after only 1 week, we saw them change a lot: more bold, more active. , actively expressing opinions and actively speaking in English. Not only that, they grasp knowledge very quickly. Because they are instructed to go straight to the problem, directly confronted with reality, it is they who discover the problem by themselves and manage to solve it by themselves. Instructors only play a role of orientation. From there, they themselves realize what they need to learn, read, and fill in their shortcomings when going to the clinic. At that time, the basic medical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology and medical ethics, ... will no longer be as dry as before. This is the advantage of the problem-based learning method, one of the most progressive learning methods today, from teaching to active learning.

Most subjects in Phan Chau Trinh University will be taught using this method. We hope they will enjoy learning and reap results and success.
