According to a study by the Vietnam Heart Association, about 25% of the Vietnamese population suffers from cardiovascular disease and hypertension. In recent years, patients with hypertension are getting younger and younger, many people are of working age.
In the 1980s, about 10% of people had blood pressure, now one in four adults has hypertension. 10 years ago, each year, the National Heart Institute performed cardiological procedures to intervene for about 5,000 patients, now more than 12,000. The number of patients treated with cardiovascular interventions is increasing at an average rate of 15% per year.
"Before, patients with high blood pressure were mainly 60-70 years old. Currently, people under 40 years old account for 20% of the total cases of hypertension," Hung said.
Cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular events are increasing between the ages of 25-40. Common reasons for increased cardiovascular disease among young people are alcohol abuse; smoking (both active and passive); sedentary; being overweight, having a history of diabetes, high blood pressure; staying up late, stressed, under psychological pressure.
Mr. Hung emphasized that Vietnam has now applied many advanced techniques, can intervene and provide timely emergency care for patients experiencing cardiovascular events. However, medical interventions can only save the patient's life for a period, unable to prevent the event from recurring. Therefore, people with cardiovascular disease need to stay healthy, have a healthy diet, exercise, quit bad habits to live peacefully with the disease.
For healthy people, Mr. Hung recommends proactively preventing cardiovascular disease early through adjusting eating habits and living regime.
