Universities offering Clinical Psychology programs

In recent years, mental health issues have increasingly gained attention from society. Academic stress, work pressure, anxiety disorders, depression… have led to a growing demand for psychological support. Therefore, Psychology (Clinical Orientation) is becoming an important field within the healthcare and public health system.

Currently, in Vietnam, only a few universities offer Psychology programs with a clinical orientation, mainly concentrated in medical training institutions. Specifically:

1. Hanoi Medical University

Hanoi Medical University is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical training institutions in Vietnam. It is considered one of the most distinguished universities in medical education, having trained many leading professors and doctors for the national healthcare system.

This is also the first university to offer a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a focus on Medical Psychology and Clinical Psychology, helping students adapt effectively when working in healthcare environments.

2. University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City is also one of the leading medical training institutions in Vietnam. The university offers programs from undergraduate to postgraduate levels and continuously focuses on education, scientific research, and technology transfer, contributing to improving healthcare quality for the community.

In 2026, the university will begin enrolling students in the Psychology program with a clinical orientation, becoming the only institution in Southern Vietnam offering this program to provide high-quality human resources for mental health care and support within the healthcare system.

3. Phan Chau Trinh University

Located in the central area of Da Nang City, Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) is the third medical university in Vietnam to offer a Psychology program (Clinical Orientation and Psychological Counseling). In addition, the university is currently training six other majors, including:

  • Medicine (General Practitioner)
  • Dentistry
  • General Nursing
  • Dental Nursing
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Hospital Management

The university develops under the Institute–University model, with a system that includes one university and nine teaching hospitals dedicated to its students, all operated under the same management system.

In addition, the university has built the first Pre-clinical Skills Simulation Hospital in Vietnam, enabling students in health sciences in general and Psychology (Clinical Orientation and Psychological Counseling) in particular to practice on simulation systems before participating in clinical internships at hospitals.

As a result, students have the opportunity to observe, practice, and approach real-life situations related to psychology and mental health throughout their studies.

With a training orientation in health sciences, PCTU develops its Clinical Psychology program by integrating psychological knowledge, health sciences, and practical training. This allows students not only to master theoretical knowledge but also to understand psychological issues in the context of healthcare.

The Psychology program at PCTU takes 3.5 to 4 years to complete, with tuition of 25 million VND per year. The curriculum is designed to balance theoretical knowledge, professional skills, and clinical practice.

Students will practice at hospitals within the system starting from their first year, helping them consolidate knowledge and develop professional skills throughout the learning process.

The training program also equips students with five core competency groups, including:

  • Clinical assessment skills
  • Psychological counseling and therapy competencies
  • Research and data analysis abilities
  • Communication, listening, and empathy skills
  • Professional ethics associated with humanistic values

These are essential foundations that help learners become professionals with strong expertise and appropriate qualities in the field of mental health care.

4. School of Medicine and Pharmacy – The University of Da Nang

In the Central region, the School of Medicine and Pharmacy – The University of Da Nang is an institution specializing in health sciences education. The school focuses on training in medical and pharmaceutical fields as well as other health-related disciplines.

In 2025, the school began implementing a Psychology program with a clinical orientation. The program is oriented within the field of social and behavioral sciences, focusing on the study, assessment, and intervention of psychological issues in medical and healthcare contexts.

SUMMARY

As society increasingly pays attention to mental health, Psychology (Clinical Orientation) is becoming a field with significant development potential. Beyond hospitals, psychologists also play important roles in schools, businesses, social organizations, and mental health care centers.

The increasing number of medical universities offering Clinical Psychology programs reflects the growing demand for human resources in this field. With training programs integrated with health sciences, hospital-based practical learning environments, and clear career orientations, students pursuing Psychology (Clinical Orientation) will have many opportunities for future development.
