The Innovative Medical Education Program (IMEP) is a training model that shifts from passive knowledge transmission to competency-based education, placing students at the center, integrating subjects into modules (organ systems), and enhancing early clinical exposure. This model focuses on practical skills, medical ethics, critical thinking, and lifelong learning to meet modern healthcare demands.
Globally, IMEP has been widely implemented at major medical universities such as Harvard University (USA), University of Geneva (Switzerland),… In Vietnam, University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi Medical University, and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy have adopted it for many years, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving learner competency.
In this context, Phan Chau Trinh University (PCTU) has initiated the development of its own IMEP, evaluated by experts from University of Medicine and Pharmacy Ho Chi Minh City and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy and officially implemented starting in 2024. At the same time, the University continuously invites experienced experts to train and enhance faculty capacity in teaching methods and assessment, in alignment with the program’s innovation requirements.

With an existing Institute–University ecosystem and outstanding infrastructure and equipment, after 02 years of implementation, the University has initially recorded positive outcomes. In PCTU’s IMEP, medical students will:
As a result, students become more proactive in learning, not only memorizing but also analyzing and handling situations through simulated clinical cases, thereby developing early clinical skills. In addition, students have access to modern equipment at hospitals and develop an up-to-date medical mindset. International integration is also enhanced, as many PCTU students have opportunities to undertake internships at major hospitals and universities worldwide such as Germany, the USA, Belgium, Finland…
