"We still have a long way to go in this pandemic," said World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on May 20 at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland. "In the past 24 hours, there have been 106,000 cases reported to WHO, at most a day since the epidemic occurred. Nearly two-thirds of these cases are reported by four countries," he said.
WHO infectious disease epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove confirmed to CNN via email, that the four countries mentioned above include the US, Russia, Brazil and India.
Reporting 106,000 cases above is not meant to be all tested or statistically tested within the last 24 hours, due to delays at many stages in the reporting process. However, statistics from WHO, the United Nations agency, which plays the role of coordinating health and public health issues internationally, are believed to be reliable.
According to the real-time update site Worldometers, the world recorded nearly 87,000 infections and more than 4,600 deaths in the past 24 hours.
President Trump on May 18 announced a letter to WHO Director-General Tedros, threatening to permanently cut off the budget if the agency does not "significantly improve" in the next 30 days. Trump said his administration contacted WHO about the desired reforms, but he did not specify what those reforms were.
At a meeting at the White House the day before, Trump criticized WHO as China's "puppet" and his government was planning to cut funding because of "not being treated properly", which could be reduced from 450 million to 40 million.
The letter to WHO was announced by the US President when it held a two-day online meeting, focusing on Covid-19 and disease-related damage reduction measures. Tedros on May 19 said he would support an independent investigation of the global response to Covid-19.
According to Worldometers statistics, more than 210 countries and territories have appeared Covid-19 after the outbreak in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, caused more than 5 million people to be infected, more than 329,000 deaths, and about a million people recovered. The United States is currently the world's largest epidemic region with nearly 1.6 million infections and nearly 95,000 deaths.
