WHO calls for production of the anti-arthritis drug Covid-19

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus calls for increased production of dexamethasone to treat patients with severe Covid-19.

"Although the data is still preliminary, recent findings suggest that dexamethasone has the potential to save the lives of severe Covid-19 patients. This is something to celebrate," Tedros told a news conference. in Geneva, Switzerland, June 22.

Mr. Tedros also said that the next challenge is increasing production, rapidly distributing, and rationally distributing dexamethasone all over the world, especially in areas with severe epidemics and in need of medicine.

"Demand for drugs has increased, after UK trials showed clear benefits of dexamethasone. Luckily, this is an inexpensive drug and there are many manufacturers around the world that help to speed the progress." production, "said Mr. Tedros.

WHO also emphasizes that dexamethasone should only be used in patients with severe or critical illness, under close clinical supervision. There is no evidence that the drug is effective in mild patients or as a preventive measure and that it can be harmful.

Previously, British clinical trials showed that dexamethasone was capable of saving the lives of severe Covid-19 patients. The Oxford University team used dexamethasone to treat more than 2,000 critically ill patients. The results, published on June 16, showed that the drug reduced the risk of death by 30% in Covid-19 patients using a ventilator and 20% in oxygen-breathing patients.

Dexamethasone helps prevent the effects of "cytokine storms" that may occur when the body's immune system overreacts to try to fight nCoV.

This drug has been used since the 1960s to reduce arthritis, asthma, dermatitis, severe allergic diseases, post-transfusion reactions, laryngitis, cerebral edema, shock ...

The number of Covid-19 cases is escalating in major countries, especially Latin America, WHO said. Research groups around the world are still racing to soon bring the vaccine to the market as well as find a specific drug to treat Covid-19 patients.
