Cancer and Covid-19 are ‘the deadly combination’

A person with cancer with Covid-19 has a death rate twice as high as normal.

The study was published in the Medical journal The Lancet on May 28 and was discussed at the American Oncology Association's online conference last weekend.

The work includes the largest-scale analysis to date, taking place in the US, UK, Spain and Canada. In one report, scientists indicated that half of 928 patients with a history of cancer with Covid-19 were hospitalized, 13% of which died. This number is much larger than the general ground.

The second report, from British experts, showed that the mortality rate of 800 patients with cancer and Covid-19 was at 28%. The risk increases with age and other health problems like high blood pressure.

This has a very important meaning. Currently the United States records 1.6 million new cancer cases each year, millions of other patients are in treatment. About 20 million people have recovered from the disease.

Dr Jeremy Warner, data specialist at Vanderbilt University, author of the study, said that cancer patients, if they do not have Covid-19, need to take adequate precautions to avoid viral infection.

Luciano Orsini, a kidney surgery patient last year, delayed surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia because of the serious epidemic. He was tested for viruses several times before going to the official operating table on April 29.

"It was an intense waiting, I kept checking the time," he said. Orsini is currently recovering at home. The most recent viral test result was negative.

"The epidemic puts a lot of pressure on the treatment system," said Dr. Howard Burris, President of the Cancer Society, Director of the Sarah Cannon Research Institute in Tennesse, USA.

He also recommended that patients with a history of cancer and lung problems be particularly vigilant, isolating themselves at home strictly, and paying attention to the health of other family members.

Nearly half of the patients in Dr. Warner's study were curing cancer when they were diagnosed with Covid-19. Others have either completed treatment, or have not yet started. Some people have a history of cancer. The cause of the extensive survey is due to the fact that some of the treatments can affect the lungs and immune system for many years after the route ends. This is closely related to the ability to recover from Covid-19.
