Editor’s Picks in this week’s JAMA+ AI:

  • Twenty-five years ago, Maja Matarić and colleagues at USC pioneered the field of socially assistive robotics to support health care applications. Advances in AI have enhanced these robots' interactions, leading to NIH-funded trials to explore their impact on cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety. Read this JAMA Medical News story for more.
  • Enrolling adults with cancer in clinical trials has historically been challenging, despite the critical role these trials play in developing new cancer treatments. To address this challenge, investigators at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute developed an AI that could make it easier to identify individuals who are eligible for clinical trials. Read this JAMA Network Open Original Investigation.
  • Language model-generated Spanish translations of pediatric patient instructions were comparable in quality to those by professional human translators, according to this study published in JAMA Pediatrics. Though human review is still important, these results suggest that large language models could assist in Spanish translation work in clinical settings.
