The COVID-19 pandemic drove many changes in care delivery, and treatment of heart failure was no exception. Those shifts helped inspire an effort to apply AI to optimize chronic care treatment.
In this episode of JAMA+ AI Conversations, Haider Warraich, MD, Program Manager at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health and former Senior Clinical Advisor for Chronic Disease to the FDA Commissioner, speaks with JAMA+ AI Editor in Chief Roy Perlis, MD, MSc, about a program to develop FDA-authorized agentic AI systems for patients with heart failure.
He describes a vision for patient-facing AI that can monitor symptoms, triage patients, and adjust treatment between visits, with modest but thoughtful human oversight. He also discusses the challenges of safety, accountability, regulation, and clinician trust in this technology, emphasizing his belief that it must outperform current care to become widely accepted.
