Topical Corticosteroids: Choice and Application

Topical corticosteroids are an essential tool for treating inflammatory skin conditions. These medications are classified by strength and the risk of adverse effects. The quantity prescribed depends on the duration of treatment, the frequency of application, the skin location, and the total surface area treated.

Pain Management in Labor

Individual patient priorities for labor pain management should be explored as a part of routine prenatal care. Continuous labor support, water immersion, and upright positioning in the first stage of labor are associated with decreased use of pharmacologic analgesia. If the patient chooses to use pain medications, effective options include parenteral opioids and regional blocks.

Common Fractures of the Radius and Ulna

Fractures of the radius and ulna are the most common fractures of the upper extremity. Patients with radius and ulna fractures often present with reduced range of movement in the joint adjacent to the fracture. Radiography or ultrasonography can confirm the diagnosis, but repeat imaging may be needed if initially negative. Although nondisplaced or minimally displaced fractures can be managed with immobilization, it is important to identify fractures that require referral to an orthopedist.
