Patient's body temperature is lowered by 10-15 degrees Celsius, cardiac arrest and brain activity, enough time to rescue serious injuries.
The team of Maryland Medical University doctors replaced half of the blood with cold salt solution to cool the patient's body, went to death for two hours, then performed surgery.
When the body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius, the cells need a constant supply of oxygen for energy. If the heart stops beating, the brain that doesn't get enough oxygen will only continue working for 5 minutes before permanent damage. However, the body needs less oxygen when it dies, so the surgery time can be extended to two hours.

After surgery, the patient's body was warmed again, the heart was restarted.
The research team was licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test even without the patient's consent, as there are currently no alternative treatments.
"We hope to release the results by the end of 2020," Samuel Tisherman said. "Once the trial is proven effective, the patients at high risk of death will be more likely to be saved."
