25% of Vietnamese people have cardiovascular disease

Each year, Vietnam has more than 200,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease, double the number of deaths from cancer, accounting for 30% of the deaths.

Cardiovascular disease is a burden to society with the highest rates of death and disability. The cost of cardiovascular disease care and treatment is a burden of hundreds of billions of dollars each year. The information was said by Associate Professor Pham Manh Hung, Director of the Vietnam Heart Institute, at the 17th National Heart Congress press conference on October 14.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 17.5 million people die each year from cardiovascular-related diseases. Cardiovascular deaths are mainly due to not being detected and treated promptly. The number of patients is increasing.

Among cardiovascular diseases, coronary artery and brain stroke are the leading causes of death or disability. Particularly coronary artery disease caused by acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome can cause death immediately, or lead to heart failure and death thereafter. Besides, stroke is also very dangerous and leaves many sequelae.

According to a study by the Vietnam Heart Association, about 25% of the Vietnamese population suffers from cardiovascular disease and hypertension. In recent years, patients with hypertension are getting younger and younger, many people are of working age.

In the 1980s, about 10% of people had blood pressure, now one in four adults has hypertension. 10 years ago, each year, the National Heart Institute performed cardiological procedures to intervene for about 5,000 patients, now more than 12,000. The number of patients treated with cardiovascular interventions is increasing at an average rate of 15% per year.

"Before, patients with high blood pressure were mainly 60-70 years old. Currently, people under 40 years old account for 20% of the total cases of hypertension," Hung said.

Cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular events are increasing between the ages of 25-40. Common reasons for increased cardiovascular disease among young people are alcohol abuse; smoking (both active and passive); sedentary; being overweight, having a history of diabetes, high blood pressure; staying up late, stressed, under psychological pressure.

Mr. Hung emphasized that Vietnam has now applied many advanced techniques, can intervene and provide timely emergency care for patients experiencing cardiovascular events. However, medical interventions can only save the patient's life for a period, unable to prevent the event from recurring. Therefore, people with cardiovascular disease need to stay healthy, have a healthy diet, exercise, quit bad habits to live peacefully with the disease.

For healthy people, Mr. Hung recommends proactively preventing cardiovascular disease early through adjusting eating habits and living regime.
